Hi everyone:
I hope everybody is having a great week. Wonderful weather yesterday and then it hailed today. It's been hectic and busy here. But hectic and busy keeps me out of trouble. Well, most of the time, anyway.
My latest novel, Shadow of Time, (see cover below in previous post) is available for pre-order now at Bookstrand.com. This novel is set in one of Arizona's most remote desert areas.
Here is a small blurb about the book: Samantha Nelson flees for her life, hiding in the remote Mojave Desert. Jesse Warner appears, but will he keep her safe or break her heart?

I hope everybody’s had a great month. I can’t believe it’s almost March already. Hopefully, the warm weather will be here soon.
I’m delighted that the author, K.R. Bailey, has agreed to be a guest on my blog today. She is a smart, productive and delightful author.
Terri: Welcome to my blog, Kathy. I’m so glad you’re able to be here. Let’s get started. Tell us a little about yourself.
Kathy: It’s great to talk to you today. Thanks for inviting me.
I’m a Utah girl, born and raised in a small town in northern Utah. Utah is home, and I love it, but I’ve always loved traveling, seeing new places and meeting new people. My sister used to laugh because everywhere we’d go, I’d pull out a notebook and make notes even though at that time I hadn’t decided to try writing. I’ve always loved to read, and actually decided to try writing a book over twenty-five years ago. I met my husband about that time and my writing was put on the back burner. When I retired in 2004, I saw an advertisement for the Utah Chapter of Romance Writers of America and I joined. My days of writing started and I love the journey!
Terri: I understand that you have visited many ghost towns in your travels. How does this help your writing?
Kathy: I love seeing old ghost towns. It starts my mind whirling, wondering about the people and the way they lived. Their old cemeteries make me wonder what happened. I’ve learned to love history even though as a kid in school, I hated history, but after having had the opportunity to visit so many towns along the east coast, civil war and revolutionary war monuments, history now fascinates me. We enjoy going out on the west desert, and I love going through the remnants of the railroad town of Kelton. My sister lives in Colorado and it’s been fun to travel with her to towns like Cripple Creek, Victor, and Marble.
When I’m writing a new story, I try to throw in a real fact or two, and I think it adds a bit of interest and intrigue. If I’ve been there, I think I can describe the area with a bit more realism and hopefully pull my readers into the places I’ve been.
Terri: Have you always lived in Utah or have you lived in other areas of the country as well?
Kathy: Spent most of my life in Utah, but I had the opportunity to move to the Washington D.C. area and live in Maryland for nearly a year. It was a fantastic opportunity, and I was able to do a lot of traveling up into New York, Maine and Vermont and the states in between. When we moved back, we were able to take a few weeks and travel down through the Carolinas, Tennessee all the way down to the Keys in Florida and into Louisiana, Texas, New Mexico and the states in between. It was a fantastic experience.
Terri: What did you like about living in other areas of the country or dislike?
Kathy: Everything was new. It was just an exciting time for me. I worked at the Securities and Exchange Commission just off Capitol Hill. I met so many wonderful people, and I still stay in touch with some of them. I was able to visit so many interesting places like Harpers Ferry, Washington’s home at Mount Vernon, Niagara Falls, and Thomas Jefferson’s home. New York City was exciting. I loved the quaint areas in Vermont and Maine.
I remember being told I’d hate it back there because the people weren’t friendly. Not true. Everyone was so helpful to us. It was a fantastic experience.
Terri: You’re a very prolific writer. How do you get so many ideas for stories?
Kathy: Gosh, Terri, how to answer that – everything I do brings a story to my mind. The problem is having the time to put my ideas on paper. When my husband and I go for long drives, which is one of our favorite things, even the tall mountains bring ideas to mind. Now don’t laugh, but last summer we went to Fish Lake and stayed in a little cabin and went fishing. All I could think about was it would be a perfect place for a murder or someone being kidnapped. The lake was very deep. The forest was so thick with pines. The cabins were old and the big lodge was quaint. Everything about that place brought story ideas to my mind.
I also have to smile because I have friends and family who come up with ideas and can’t wait to tell them to me, hoping I can make a story out of some of them. My sister and her husband were in Yellowstone and came up with an idea for a ghost story. I love Yellowstone. A few years ago I bought a book about ghosts in Yellowstone. Needless to say, my mind is still trying to come up with a perfect story about that.
Terri: I notice that you have a wolf in your book, Never Too Late, My Love. Is this your favorite animal?
Kathy: I can’t say wolves are my favorite animal, but they definitely intrigue me. I think they are beautiful creatures. When I was writing Never Too Late, My Love and was researching the Goshute Indians, for some reason the wolf spirit came to my mind even though the Goshutes really never had stories about wolves. It just seemed to fit what I was writing at the time.
I also love bears. I love watching them in real life in Yellowstone. They are fascinating animals, and I think have a mystical way about them. But I was raised around Morgan horses and my horse, Rascal, will always have a special place in my heart. In fact, you’ll notice a lot of my stories will have Morgan horses in them. We have a yellow lab, and they are such sweet dogs. I have to include them in my love of animals, too.
Terri: Is your latest novel, Murder and Lies out yet? When do you expect it to be in print format? Can you give us an excerpt from it?
Kathy: Actually, Murder and Lies is out in e-book formats right now. It’s supposed to be out in print copy any time soon.
Here’s an excerpt:
Maggie started to step outside but gunfire exploded all around her. The night filled with noise. Yelling. Screaming. Maggie stayed hidden inside the dark shed, frozen in fear. She tried to find a weapon, a shovel, anything she could use to protect herself.
The door slammed shut on the big house, and she heard running. People everywhere running and shouting. She shivered but remembered Sam’s words about staying hidden, no matter what. What the hell was happening? She heard glass breaking. More screaming. Pandemonium everywhere, like a war going on. Maggie whimpered and slid closer to the back of the shed.
A bullet broke the glass above her head, and she bit her tongue to keep from screaming. Another bullet hit the wall. Suddenly, the door to the shed flew open, and Sam stood in the doorway, his eyes wide. “Maggie, come on,” he yelled and grabbed her hand, pulling her out of the shed and up the hillside behind the house.
Maggie ran until she thought her lungs would explode. “I can’t. I can’t go any farther.” She slumped to the ground, gasping for air.
“Maggie, we have to get away from here.” Sam tugged, and Maggie forced herself to stand. They continued but at a slightly slower pace.
She didn’t have time to look behind her. There was no time for any discussion about where they were going. She forced her mind to concentrate on running, putting one foot in front of the other. She didn’t know how long they ran or how far away from the lodge they’d come, but when Sam stopped, she sank gratefully to the ground, gasping for air. Closing her eyes, she concentrated on breathing. When she opened her eyes, she saw a dark spot on Sam’s shirt.
“You’re hurt,” she cried out.
“Ssssh.” He shook his head. “I’m fine.”
Maggie closed her eyes and leaned against a rock, willing herself not to panic. Finally, she couldn’t wait any longer. “Sam, what’s going on?”
He glanced at her. “Wilson arrived.”
“Wilson?” Maggie sat up, her eyes going wide.
“The FBI was with him. He made a deal with them.”
“What?” Maggie’s heart soared. Wilson was here, trying to help free her. She’d been right to trust him. Now she had to find a way to survive until he found her.
Sam moved closer and took her hand. “It’s okay. I’ve never quit loving you, Maggie.”
Maggie closed her eyes, but for some reason, his words sounded wrong. She listened to his even breathing but didn’t feel any comfort. Suddenly, her nerves were on edge. Something wasn’t right, and she didn’t feel safe. She didn’t feel protected. She glanced up at Sam and in the early dawn could see his face and realized he was looking at her, but his eyes were full of disdain. She pulled away quickly.
“Sam. What’s happening?”
He snickered. “What do you mean? You’re with me. We got away.”
The sound of his voice made fear prickle her spine…

Terri: Are you working on another novel?
Kathy: Always. It seems like I always have several stories running around in my mind.
One is my first western historical, and I had fun researching the LaPlata mining area for this one. It’s getting really close to being completed. I have ideas to write two sequels to it.

I had fun writing this book. I got the idea when I went hunting with my husband and we drove over Wolf Creek Pass, which is a beautiful, rugged mountain about an hour out of Salt Lake City. The rocks were so big, they were like sentries guarding the mountain. The pine trees were so thick it was if they wouldn’t allow any sunlight to reach the ground. Here’s a blurb:

Today, I’m pleased to announce that Mary Martinez, the author of the Beckett Series, including Disappear, is a guest on my blog. She is a fascinating and productive artist.
Terri: Welcome, Mary. How long have you been writing and what got you started?
Mary: Hi Terri, thank you for inviting me to be on your blog. As for how long have I been writing. That depends on if you want to count the stretches in between. I tried writing short stories when I was young, but it was during the beatnik era, I’m sure most of the readers have no clue what that is. Anyway, I was influenced by it and they were just off the wall. Then I tried when my kids were small—you know before home computers. That didn’t work. So I swore I’d write when they left home. They wouldn’t leave home, so I finally started when they were at least old enough to let me write. I’ve been writing faithfully since about 2000.
Terri: You have said you live in a small town. Have you lived in a big city? If so, how do they compare?
Mary: Nope I’ve only lived in small towns. I’ve visited big cities. I love New York, and if I had a LOT of money, I’d love to live there. If we moved there on our income we’d be in the slums of NYC. I love the small town values and the small town celebrations, those I’d miss. I love the fact I can go to the post office and know people by name. Or run into everyone I know at the grocery store.
Terri: If you had to live somewhere else, where would it be and why?
Mary: Oh that’s easy. Either San Diego, CA if it had to be in the US or Italy in Tuscany.
Terri: Where do you get such original ideas for your books?
Mary: I don’t know that my ideas are original. They say there’s only about 5 or 6 different stories. It’s all in the twist and turns of how you tell it.
Terri: You have a new series out next month. Can we get an excerpt or blurb and where can we purchase it?
Mary: The Becketts are coming to town! The Beckett Series is about a family who grew up in Brooklyn.
The Beckett’s have a strong sense of family and honor.

Author News: On February 15th, I’ll have a most interesting and knowledgeable author, Mary Martinez, as a guest on my blog. She has written several books, which I have found very good reads, and I think you will find her comments and expertise enjoyable.
In late February, I will have Author, K.R. Bailey, as a guest on my blog. I’ll let you know what date it will be. Ms. Bailey has authored a number of romance novels. The Utah RWA Conference was excellent! There were interesting speakers plus authors, editors and agents who came together to meet and talk about the craft of writing. A book signing on Friday evening was great, and I was able to buy books from some up and coming authors.

Where does the time go? It was just August, I swear. I turned around and it’s October!!
The Heart of the West Romance Writers’ Conference starts tomorrow. It sounds very exciting this year, so it should be a lot of fun. Hope to see some of you there.
Forbidden Quest is my new book coming out this month. It’s the sequel to Forbidden Fire and is being published by Mojocastle Press.

STORY EXCERPT
Melissa turned with the money in her hand. Her mouth fell open as she faced the waiter, who had stepped back inside the suite and now held a gun aimed at her.
“Wha–what do you want? There’s my purse. Take it.”
His lopsided smirk tortured her as she realized the truth. “I’m here for you.”
She saw him slowly pull back on the trigger. Melissa looked around frantically but knew there was nowhere to run, no place to hide. She squeezed her eyes shut, hoping it would be quick. Would it hurt? She heard a click. Opening her eyes, she saw him try to fire the weapon again. In anger, he threw the gun to the floor.
Melissa turned to run, but his arm snaked around her, locking on her waist and dragging her against him backward across the balcony. She tried to scream. His other hand came up, covering her mouth and nose with pressure so great pain shot across her jaw. She could smell the acrid odor of tobacco on his hand as she fought to get away.
He turned around, forcing her in front of him and against the railing. She grabbed for the top rail.
“Come on, you can’t win this fight,” he growled in her ear, the liquor and cigarettes on his breath making her gag. “It’ll be over in a minute.”
She fought back, keeping a stranglehold on the railing.
He started to pry her fingers loose. Melissa bit the hand over her mouth. He yanked his hand away as she screamed, “Help! Help!”
His grip tightened around her waist. Melissa felt her feet lift off the floor as he forced her up.

I hope everyone is having a wonderful summer and enjoying the weather.
My latest book, “Out of the Past,” will be published by Bookstrand in August. The print copy will be out by Christmas.
It is a mystery/suspense about a young woman who is almost run over by a hit and run driver. She thinks it’s simply an accident, but is it? I will have an excerpt on my web site soon.
Many, many of you have e-readers. Everyone has their favorite brand, but no matter what the brand is, I think most people love them. I have found mine to be priceless. I take it with me whenever I leave town.
I’m signing off for now as I’m back to my computer creating a new manuscript. (Okay, the secret's out. I can almost always be found at my computer.)
I guess the quote by Danzae Pace sums up my thinking about writing: “If I fall asleep with a pen in my hand, don't remove it - I might be writing in my dreams.”

Spring

Heart of the West Conference
There is a wonderful conference in Park City, Utah for authors, writers, aspiring writers and readers. It is the 2010 Heart of the West Conference being held on October 8 and 9, 2010. There will be great speakers and informative workshops, and a book signing is scheduled.
It is being held at the Grand Summit at The Canyons, Park City, Utah, by the Utah Romance Writers of America.

School's starting again, so the hectic pace for parents is well underway. Here are a few of tips to make it through the harder days:
Always keep your words soft and sweet, just in case you have to eat them.
We could learn a lot from crayons. Some are sharp, some are pretty and some are dull. Some have weird names, and all are different colors, but they all have to live in the same box.
It may be that your sole purpose in life is to be kind to others.

Summer came in with a bang, but I love the hot weather and all the showy flowers it brings. Some of my writing time is outside with my laptop. I can generally be found on an old swing, next to the pond, where I write and enjoy the weather too.
My romances are generally about strong women who find themselves in untenable positions where there seems to be no way out. However, I love writing about those women who take a chance on themselves and try to find a way to resolve the issue, even if it seems like a lost cause.
After all, to paraphrase the famous U.S. attorney, Clarence Darrow: "Lost causes are the only causes worth fighting for."

My next book, Shadow of Time, is a time travel romance set in Arizona. Here is a short overview:

One year later, her goal of moving to Los Angeles is in sight, but she doesn’t bargain on the tall, ruggedly handsome stranger who walks out of the desert and into her life. Unable to turn away from someone in need, she allows Jesse Warner to stay in the old barn on the property she rents until he is able to move on.

1: Tell us about your book “Forbidden Fire.”
“Forbidden Fire” is the story of Jenny Lange and her brother, Josh. She is engaged to Karl Dunstan, a man she doesn’t love, but Jenny knows he will kill her if he finds out her real reason for becoming his fiancée. Jenny and her brother have decided to seek justice through revenge.
When Karl brings in the Pinkerton Detective Agency to catch the outlaws robbing his stagecoach line, she knows it is foolhardy to continue, or is it? One last robbery on the only unguarded stage could financially ruin Karl and force him to sell the ranch and the childhood home that she and her brother, Josh, want to get back, and they would buy it with Karl’s money. Then she could break her engagement to Karl, a man she knows is responsible for the death of her parents.
When she meets Pinkerton Detective Cliff Rancord, she knows he will do whatever he has to do to catch the bandits robbing Karl’s stages. What she doesn’t bargain for is the instant attraction between them, an attraction that could be her undoing. As long as she is around him, she is in danger of losing her heart, as well as her freedom and possibly her life at the end of a hangman’s noose.
2: What inspired you to write “Forbidden Fire?”
I read the true story of Pearl Hart, who committed the last stagecoach robbery in the old west in Arizona Territory in 1899. Although her reasons were foolish, it inspired me to write a novel about a woman committing such robberies for what she believes is the right reason.
3: How can readers get a copy?

4: I understand you’re working on a sequel. Can you tell us a little about it?
The sequel is titled “Forbidden Quest.” It is the story of Josh Lange, the younger brother of Jenny. In the ten years since the man who killed their parents died, Josh has purchased and developed a successful ranch with his partner, Gabe Andrie. He feels he never will be as lucky in love as his sister but has developed a busy life and is content. When he goes into town one Saturday night, he meets Maria in the local bordello and assumes she is a newly hired working girl. His tremendous attraction to the dark-haired beauty with the luminous brown eyes is not lessened when she runs from him, but he has no way of knowing the terrible secret she hides.
5: Have you always wanted to be an author?
I have loved to write since I was in high school, but only after the children were grown and on their own, and I retired from a business career could I realize my dream of writing on a full-time basis. I am an avid reader and love stories set in the western United States.
6: Tell us about yourself.
I was born and raised in Washington State and have also lived in Montana, Arizona and now Utah. I live with my wonderful husband, Jerry. We share our home with Grizzly, the happiest dog in the world, and Shadow, our aristocratic cat. I have three children and three grandchildren. I have been lucky enough to pursue what I love to do most: writing.
7: Are you working on other stories? Can you tell us a little about any of them?
“Shadow of Time” is a time travel story set in modern day Arizona.

8: Do you have any advice for new authors?
Join a writers’ critique group. There is nothing I look forward to more than my critique meetings. It is a way for like-minded people to critique your work honestly, and generally speaking, I have found that they give kind but honest reviews, which help you grow as a writer.
DON’T GIVE UP. When you send a synopsis or queries to a literary agent or a publisher, you will get rejection letters. However, I have never known an author who hasn’t gotten one. Every rejection letter you receive gets you one step closer to the literary agent or publisher who wants your work.
Join your national and local RWA groups. This gives you wonderful access to information about the nuts and bolts of writing, literary agents and publishers, and you meet people with your same interests. You will make many new and lasting friends.

I have been lucky enough to pursue what I love to do most: writing.
7: Are you working on other stories? Can you tell us a little about any of them?
“Shadow of Time” is a time travel story set in modern day Arizona.
Jesse Warner is on his way home after years of working as a cowhand. A freak August storm forces him to take cover in a cave. The next morning, nothing is what it used to be, and his horse is gone. With no options, he walks to the nearest homestead and, unknowingly, into the 21st century.
After a devastating personal relationship, Samantha wants no man in her life. Fearful that her ex-boyfriend will find her, she moves to the remote desert outside Golden Valley, Arizona, an area so desolate it has changed little in the last 100 years. One year later, her goal of moving to Hollywood and pursuing an acting career is within sight, but she doesn’t bargain on the tall, ruggedly handsome stranger who walks out of the desert and into her life. Unable to turn away from someone in need, she allows Jesse to stay in the old barn on the property she rents until he is able to move on.
Samantha’s total independence has been a hard fought battle, but Jesse’s kisses are a powerful and intoxicating aphrodisiac. Is their growing love strong enough to keep them together or will their two worlds tear them apart?
8: Do you have any advice for new authors?
Join a writers’ critique group. There is nothing I look forward to more than my critique meetings. It is a way for like-minded people to critique your work honestly, and generally speaking, I have found that they give kind but honest reviews, which help you grow as a writer.
DON’T GIVE UP. When you send a synopsis or queries to a literary agent or a publisher, you will get rejection letters. However, I have never known an author who hasn’t gotten one. Every rejection letter you receive gets you one step closer to the literary agent or publisher who wants your work.
Join your national and local RWA groups. This gives you wonderful access to information about the nuts and bolts of writing, literary agents and publishers, and you meet people with your same interests. You will make many new and lasting friends.

I have attached a copy of the cover of my first book, Forbidden Fire. I have also attached an excerpt from the book. Enjoy!Josh had a ten-minute head start on him, but he’d be easy to track with the blood trail. From the amount of blood intermingled with the horse’s hoofprints, Cliff expected to find him dead. He grimaced at the thought. He’d never gotten used to the killing.
At the edge of the tree line, he kept to the scrub trees as much as possible, searching the area for a rider. Then he spotted him. He was still in the saddle.
Slowing, working his way to within twenty yards of the horse and rider, Cliff dismounted with rifle in hand. The rider didn’t appear to notice him as his horse slowed to a walk.
Slipping from the saddle in slow motion, the outlaw pitched sideways, hitting the ground with a dull thud. Cliff approached him cautiously. The body lay motionless, face down in the Arizona dirt. Aiming his rifle at the outlaw’s head, he toed him with his boot. No reaction. He rolled him over. The bandanna still covered the outlaw’s face, but the hat fell away.
Stunned, he stared at long, cascading auburn hair. Cliff’s mind raced. Kneeling, he removed the bandanna. Unconscious, Jenny’s face was pale and still. He felt for a pulse. Faint, but it was there. Lifting her to a sitting position, he pressed his kerchief against the wound in her shoulder. He had to keep her alive.
