Author News: On February 15th, I’ll have a most interesting and knowledgeable author, Mary Martinez, as a guest on my blog. She has written several books, which I have found very good reads, and I think you will find her comments and expertise enjoyable.

In late February, I will have Author, K.R. Bailey, as a guest on my blog. I’ll let you know what date it will be. Ms. Bailey has authored a number of romance novels. I think I’ve read just about all of them. Her books are always a good read, and I think you will find her to be very interesting author.

UTAH RWA CONFERENCE

The Utah RWA Conference was excellent! There were interesting speakers plus authors, editors and agents who came together to meet and talk about the craft of writing. A book signing on Friday evening was great, and I was able to buy books from some up and coming authors.

Where does the time go? It was just August, I swear. I turned around and it’s October!!

The Heart of the West Romance Writers’ Conference starts tomorrow. It sounds very exciting this year, so it should be a lot of fun. Hope to see some of you there.

Forbidden Quest is my new book coming out this month. It’s the sequel to Forbidden Fire and is being published by Mojocastle Press.

Out of the Past was published in August by Bookstrand.

My new book, OUT OF THE PAST, will be published on August 16, 2011, by Siren-Bookstrand. It is a romance mystery/suspense. Below is an excerpt:

STORY EXCERPT

Melissa turned with the money in her hand. Her mouth fell open as she faced the waiter, who had stepped back inside the suite and now held a gun aimed at her.
“Wha–what do you want? There’s my purse. Take it.”
His lopsided smirk tortured her as she realized the truth. “I’m here for you.”
She saw him slowly pull back on the trigger. Melissa looked around frantically but knew there was nowhere to run, no place to hide. She squeezed her eyes shut, hoping it would be quick. Would it hurt? She heard a click. Opening her eyes, she saw him try to fire the weapon again. In anger, he threw the gun to the floor.
Melissa turned to run, but his arm snaked around her, locking on her waist and dragging her against him backward across the balcony. She tried to scream. His other hand came up, covering her mouth and nose with pressure so great pain shot across her jaw. She could smell the acrid odor of tobacco on his hand as she fought to get away.
He turned around, forcing her in front of him and against the railing. She grabbed for the top rail.
“Come on, you can’t win this fight,” he growled in her ear, the liquor and cigarettes on his breath making her gag. “It’ll be over in a minute.”
She fought back, keeping a stranglehold on the railing.
He started to pry her fingers loose. Melissa bit the hand over her mouth. He yanked his hand away as she screamed, “Help! Help!”
His grip tightened around her waist. Melissa felt her feet lift off the floor as he forced her up.

I hope everyone is having a wonderful summer and enjoying the weather.

My latest book, “Out of the Past,” will be published by Bookstrand in August. The print copy will be out by Christmas.

It is a mystery/suspense about a young woman who is almost run over by a hit and run driver. She thinks it’s simply an accident, but is it? I will have an excerpt on my web site soon.

Many, many of you have e-readers. Everyone has their favorite brand, but no matter what the brand is, I think most people love them. I have found mine to be priceless. I take it with me whenever I leave town.

I’m signing off for now as I’m back to my computer creating a new manuscript. (Okay, the secret's out. I can almost always be found at my computer.)

I guess the quote by Danzae Pace sums up my thinking about writing: “If I fall asleep with a pen in my hand, don't remove it - I might be writing in my dreams.”

Heart of the West Conference

There is a wonderful conference in Park City, Utah for authors, writers, aspiring writers and readers. It is the 2010 Heart of the West Conference being held on October 8 and 9, 2010. There will be great speakers and informative workshops, and a book signing is scheduled.

It is being held at the Grand Summit at The Canyons, Park City, Utah, by the Utah Romance Writers of America.

School's starting again, so the hectic pace for parents is well underway. Here are a few of tips to make it through the harder days:

Always keep your words soft and sweet, just in case you have to eat them.

We could learn a lot from crayons. Some are sharp, some are pretty and some are dull. Some have weird names, and all are different colors, but they all have to live in the same box.

It may be that your sole purpose in life is to be kind to others.

Summer came in with a bang, but I love the hot weather and all the showy flowers it brings. Some of my writing time is outside with my laptop. I can generally be found on an old swing, next to the pond, where I write and enjoy the weather too.

My romances are generally about strong women who find themselves in untenable positions where there seems to be no way out. However, I love writing about those women who take a chance on themselves and try to find a way to resolve the issue, even if it seems like a lost cause.

After all, to paraphrase the famous U.S. attorney, Clarence Darrow: "Lost causes are the only causes worth fighting for."

It’s been vacation time, and my husband and I drove to Yellowstone. We hadn’t been there in years, and of course, we saw Old Faithful. Again, as years ago, I was awestruck by the natural beauty of it all. Yellowstone and the Grand Tetons are magnificent.

1: Tell us about your book “Forbidden Fire.”

“Forbidden Fire” is the story of Jenny Lange and her brother, Josh. She is engaged to Karl Dunstan, a man she doesn’t love, but Jenny knows he will kill her if he finds out her real reason for becoming his fiancée. Jenny and her brother have decided to seek justice through revenge.

When Karl brings in the Pinkerton Detective Agency to catch the outlaws robbing his stagecoach line, she knows it is foolhardy to continue, or is it? One last robbery on the only unguarded stage could financially ruin Karl and force him to sell the ranch and the childhood home that she and her brother, Josh, want to get back, and they would buy it with Karl’s money. Then she could break her engagement to Karl, a man she knows is responsible for the death of her parents.

When she meets Pinkerton Detective Cliff Rancord, she knows he will do whatever he has to do to catch the bandits robbing Karl’s stages. What she doesn’t bargain for is the instant attraction between them, an attraction that could be her undoing. As long as she is around him, she is in danger of losing her heart, as well as her freedom and possibly her life at the end of a hangman’s noose.

2: What inspired you to write “Forbidden Fire?”

I read the true story of Pearl Hart, who committed the last stagecoach robbery in the old west in Arizona Territory in 1899. Although her reasons were foolish, it inspired me to write a novel about a woman committing such robberies for what she believes is the right reason.

3: How can readers get a copy?

4: I understand you’re working on a sequel. Can you tell us a little about it?

The sequel is titled “Forbidden Quest.” It is the story of Josh Lange, the younger brother of Jenny. In the ten years since the man who killed their parents died, Josh has purchased and developed a successful ranch with his partner, Gabe Andrie. He feels he never will be as lucky in love as his sister but has developed a busy life and is content. When he goes into town one Saturday night, he meets Maria in the local bordello and assumes she is a newly hired working girl. His tremendous attraction to the dark-haired beauty with the luminous brown eyes is not lessened when she runs from him, but he has no way of knowing the terrible secret she hides.

5: Have you always wanted to be an author?

I have loved to write since I was in high school, but only after the children were grown and on their own, and I retired from a business career could I realize my dream of writing on a full-time basis. I am an avid reader and love stories set in the western United States.

6: Tell us about yourself.

I was born and raised in Washington State and have also lived in Montana, Arizona and now Utah. I live with my wonderful husband, Jerry. We share our home with Grizzly, the happiest dog in the world, and Shadow, our aristocratic cat. I have three children and three grandchildren. I have been lucky enough to pursue what I love to do most: writing.

7: Are you working on other stories? Can you tell us a little about any of them?

“Shadow of Time” is a time travel story set in modern day Arizona.

8: Do you have any advice for new authors?

Join a writers’ critique group. There is nothing I look forward to more than my critique meetings. It is a way for like-minded people to critique your work honestly, and generally speaking, I have found that they give kind but honest reviews, which help you grow as a writer.

DON’T GIVE UP. When you send a synopsis or queries to a literary agent or a publisher, you will get rejection letters. However, I have never known an author who hasn’t gotten one. Every rejection letter you receive gets you one step closer to the literary agent or publisher who wants your work.

Join your national and local RWA groups. This gives you wonderful access to information about the nuts and bolts of writing, literary agents and publishers, and you meet people with your same interests. You will make many new and lasting friends.

Josh had a ten-minute head start on him, but he’d be easy to track with the blood trail. From the amount of blood intermingled with the horse’s hoofprints, Cliff expected to find him dead. He grimaced at the thought. He’d never gotten used to the killing.

At the edge of the tree line, he kept to the scrub trees as much as possible, searching the area for a rider. Then he spotted him. He was still in the saddle.

Slowing, working his way to within twenty yards of the horse and rider, Cliff dismounted with rifle in hand. The rider didn’t appear to notice him as his horse slowed to a walk.

Slipping from the saddle in slow motion, the outlaw pitched sideways, hitting the ground with a dull thud. Cliff approached him cautiously. The body lay motionless, face down in the Arizona dirt. Aiming his rifle at the outlaw’s head, he toed him with his boot. No reaction. He rolled him over. The bandanna still covered the outlaw’s face, but the hat fell away.

Stunned, he stared at long, cascading auburn hair. Cliff’s mind raced. Kneeling, he removed the bandanna. Unconscious, Jenny’s face was pale and still. He felt for a pulse. Faint, but it was there. Lifting her to a sitting position, he pressed his kerchief against the wound in her shoulder. He had to keep her alive.
